Vitiligo or Leucoderma is an acquired de-pigmentation of the skin that is very common with a worldwide preponderance. Leucoderma or vitiligo is a distressful skin disease and the word Leucoderma means ‘to have white skin’. There would be a gradual loss of pigment called melanin from the dermal layers that results into white patches. These patches look bad, especially in persons having dark complexions. Leucoderma can occur at any age, person and in any kind of skins.

Symptoms Of Leucoderma

1. The whiteness starts as a small discolored white or pale brown spot, which spreads and becomes whiter after a few days, finally turning milky white in color

2. Alopecia or loss of hair

3. Premature graying of hair

4. General weakness

5. Sensitivity towards cold

6. Hair on the affected area also become white

Treatment of Leucoderma

The treatment of leucoderma is not certain. The cure is gloomy and the medical scientists are still in search of exact treatment. None of the treatment, as of now, is a surefire for treating such skinny conditions. White patches can be hidden making some cosmetic coats but again, it is not a permanent solution. However, here is the list of treatment of leucoderma that is in general practice –

Psoralen Photo-chemotherapy

Avoidance of consumption of citrus fruits, tamarinds, fishes, lobsters, crabs and prawns is advised as part of treatment.

Stop applying colored dyes

Autologous Melanocyte Transplants

In few cases, oral antioxidants can give favorable results.

Leucoderma diet

Constitutional measures should be adopted to cleanse the system of accumulated toxins.
To begin with, the patient should undertake a fast of juices for about a week. After the juice fast, the patient may adopt a restricted diet consisting of fresh fruits, raw or steamed vegetables, and wholemeal bread or wheat tortilla. Curd and milk may be added to this diet after a few days.


The patient may, thereafter, gradually embark upon a well-balanced diet of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, and fruits. This diet may be supplemented with cold-pressed vegetable oils, honey, and yeast.J uice fasting may be repeated at intervals of two months or so.

Avoid tea/coffee, polished rice, tinned or bottled foods etc.

The patient should avoid tea, coffee, alcoholic beverages, all condiments and highly- flavoured dishes, sugar, white flour products, denatured cereals like polished rice and pearled barley, and tinned or bottled foods.

1. 'Amla' juice with honey is helpful for the treatment of leucoderma.

2. 'Giloy' juice is help in leucoderma

3. Cow's urine woks effectively in leucoderma

4. 'Shwet jayanti' root with cow milk on every Sunday is oldest therapy

5. 'Harad', 'neem' leaf juice and 'amla' helpful in leucoderma

6. Seeds of 'bakuchi'with luke water and its paste on affected area

7. Paste of 'aparajita's root with cow's urine on affected area
